Do red cars cost more to insure?

You may have heard the myth that red cars cost more to insure, often with varying reasons why. The truth is, the color of your car has nothing to do with your premium. Insurance companies are more interested in your vehicle’s make, model, age, safety features, and your driving history. What’s not a myth, though — is that people really can save a ton of money by switching insurers. Check out Money’s car insurance tool to see if you could, too.

No pressure to reinvent yourself. No mandatory resolutions. Just one last chance to pause, look around, and decide how you want to step into whatever comes next.

New Year’s Eve in Hanover has never been about spectacle. It’s about people. Where you gather. What feels grounding. Whether that’s skating with your kids, laughing until your face hurts, dancing it out, or ringing in midnight with a plate of food and familiar faces.

Below, you’ll find a little local history, plus everything happening around town tonight, from afternoon plans to after-midnight celebrations.

🎆 Hanover on New Year’s Eve: Then & Now

As the clock ticks toward midnight, Hanoverians prepare to welcome the new year in familiar ways. Some with a champagne toast. Others with pork and sauerkraut simmering on the stove.

We may not host a flashy ball drop or land on a national broadcast, but New Year’s Eve in Hanover has always carried something better: tradition, reflection, and a strong sense of home.

Here’s how this town has marked the turning of the year over time.

🕯️ Watch Night & Worn Hymnals

In the early 1900s and well into the mid-20th century, New Year’s Eve in Hanover was often spent in pews rather than parties.

Local churches like St. Matthew Lutheran, Grace United Church of Christ, and First United Methodist held annual Watch Night services, a centuries-old tradition rooted in reflection and spiritual renewal.

“We’d bundle up and walk to church as a family, even if it was snowing,” recalls one lifelong Hanover resident. “We’d pray, sing hymns, and wait for the church bell to ring at midnight.”

These services often included candlelight vigils, organ music, and moments of quiet gratitude.

🪩 Dancing into the 1950s & ’60s

As Hanover entered the postwar era, New Year’s Eve took on a more social tone.

Dinner dances popped up at places like the American Legion, the Elks Lodge, and local hotels. Trends at the time included fur coats, party hats, live bands, lots of dancing, and always ended with Auld Lang Syne and a midnight kiss.

Archived editions of The Evening Sun from the 1950s include advertisements with headlines like “New Year’s Eve Gala: Live Band & Champagne Toast — $2.50 per person,” Dutch Country Restaurant: Prime Rib Special + Dancing Till 1 AM,” and “Dress your best — prizes for best couple!”

Though Hanover never developed a massive public NYE bash, I’m sure these celebrations offered plenty of charm.

🍽️ Pork, Sauerkraut, and Pennsylvania Dutch Luck

One tradition that has never gone out of style in Hanover is the New Year’s Day meal of pork and sauerkraut, almost always paired with mashed potatoes. This is a staple of Pennsylvania Dutch heritage.

“It’s what we grew up with. My grandmother made the sauerkraut from scratch and let it simmer all day,” says a Hanover local. “She said it brings luck. You never start the year with chicken, it scratches backward. Pigs root forward.”

For generations, Hanover kitchens have carried on this flavorful tradition. I’ll be eating this tomorrow with my family, how about you?

🥨 Could Hanover Start a New NYE Tradition?

Many nearby Pennsylvania towns celebrate with quirky item “drops” at midnight. Dillsburg has its Pickle Drop and Hershey has its Kiss Drop). But Hanover has yet to adopt a signature New Year’s Eve symbol.

What if we started one? Ideas floated by locals in the past included a pretzel drop (Snyder’s-style!), a glowing chip bag balloon (Utz-style!), a bell ringing, or just a simple family-friendly event downtown with music and food vendors.

“It would be great to have something that brings the whole town together,” one resident suggested. “Even if it’s just hot cider and a countdown on the Square.”

I love most of these ideas. I’ll politely veto balloons because I know how environmentally unfriendly they are. They always end up in the waterways and polluting our oceans, but I’ll save that tangent for another day. As for the other ideas? They’re all strong contenders.
